Dawn Patrol: Chasing Perfect Barrels in Hikkaduwa

15 March 2026·1 min read

The alarm goes off at 4:30am. No hesitation — the charts showed a solid six-foot swell pushing through overnight, and Hikkaduwa has been firing all week.

Getting There

By the time we arrived at the point, the sky was a deep indigo turning burnt orange at the horizon. Three surfers were already out, silhouettes cutting across glassy walls.

The Light

Dawn sessions are everything for surf photography. That first hour gives you a quality of light you simply cannot replicate — soft, directional, warm. I set up with the 400mm from the rocky outcrop on the south end.

The Shot

The defining frame came around 6:15am. A local ripper launched an air reverse off the back of a clean four-footer, and the sun caught the spray at exactly the right angle.

"The best surf photos aren't taken, they're waited for."
